Introduction: Moving from Pixels to Mathematical Vectors

Now that you have selected a clean AI-generated concept image from Gemini, it is time to move into Adobe Illustrator.

An AI image is made of pixels (raster graphics). If you zoom in or enlarge it for a storefront sign, it blurs and pixelates. In this lesson, you will transform that pixel image into crisp, infinitely scalable mathematical vector paths using Illustrator’s Image Trace engine, expand the artwork, and clean away unwanted anchor points.

What You Will Learn

In this lesson, you will learn to:

  1. Create a standardized Adobe Illustrator document with custom dimensions.
  2. Import and position raster reference imagery onto your canvas.
  3. Configure the Image Trace Panel (Presets, Threshold, Paths, Corners, Noise, and Ignore White).
  4. Expand the trace into editable vector paths and ungroup elements.
  5. Isolate, clean up, and delete stray raster artifacts using the Direct Selection Tool and Pathfinder.

Step-by-Step Technical Workflow

1. Setting Up Your Illustrator Document
  1. Open Adobe Illustrator.
  2. Click New File (or Ctrl + N / Cmd + N).
  3. Set the following document specifications:
    • Units: Pixels (px)
    • Width: 1920 px | Height: 1080 px (or standard 1000 × 1000 px square master)
    • Color Mode: RGB (standard for digital concepting and screen review)
    • Raster Effects: High (300 ppi)
  4. Click Create.
2. Placing Your AI Image Concept
  1. Go to the top menu: File > Place… (or Shift + Ctrl + P / Shift + Cmd + P).
  2. Select your saved AI concept image (e.g., luxline_logo_concept_01.png).
  3. Click and drag onto the artboard to position it centrally.
  4. Ensure the image is selected using the Selection Tool (V).
3. Configuring the Image Trace Engine

Do not simply click the default “Image Trace” button, as it often produces rough edges and unwanted background shapes. Instead:

  1. With the image selected, open the dedicated panel: Window > Image Trace.
  2. Check the Preview box at the bottom left of the panel to see changes in real time.
  3. Set Mode to Black and White (or Color if you are capturing multi-tone segments directly, though black-and-white tracing yields the cleanest mathematical paths).
  4. Adjust the Advanced sliders:
    • Threshold: Move the slider to capture the desired line weight of the flowing hair curves without letting adjacent shapes bleed together.
    • Paths: Increase to 75%–85% for tighter curve adherence.
    • Corners: Set between 40%–60% to keep organic hair curves smooth while retaining sharp terminal points.
    • Noise: Set low (around 5–10 px) to prevent the tracer from creating microscopic specks.
    • Options: Check Ignore White to automatically eliminate the solid background, leaving only the icon itself.
4. Expanding and Ungrouping

The trace is currently a live preview. To turn it into real anchor points:

  1. Click Expand in the top Control Bar (or go to Object > Image Trace > Expand).
  2. You will now see blue vector outlines and anchor points across your graphic.
  3. Right-click the artwork and select Ungroup (repeat Ctrl + Shift + G / Cmd + Shift + G if nested groups exist).
5. Path Cleanup and Geometry Inspection
  1. Switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A).
  2. Click on any stray anchor points, isolated specks, or distorted internal line segments created by the AI image and hit Delete.
  3. Select overlapping shapes that belong to the same stroke or hair strand. Open Window > Pathfinder and click Unite (the first icon under Shape Modes) to merge them into a single, seamless compound shape.
  4. Smooth out any jagged handles along the flowing “L” curve using the Smooth Tool (nested under the Shaper / Pencil tool menu) by dragging along rough bezier points.

Practical Activity: Vectorize Your Concept

Open Illustrator and trace your chosen candidate. Inspect the final shapes at 400% zoom: ensure there are no jagged jagged islands, random holes, or stray background boxes remaining around your mark.

Lesson Summary

  • Raster AI graphics must be vectorized in Adobe Illustrator to achieve infinite scalability and clean path manipulation.
  • The Image Trace Panel allows precise control over Threshold, Paths, Noise, and background elimination via Ignore White.
  • Expanding converts the live trace into editable vector points; Ungrouping and the Pathfinder (Unite) tool merge shapes and eliminate stray raster artifacts.
